Search is changing quickly. With AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity becoming part of how people discover information, businesses are asking a new question: Should we focus more on on-page SEO or off-page SEO for AI visibility?
The answer is simple: you need both, but they play different roles.
AI search systems need to understand what your website says before they can use it as a source.
That makes strong on-page SEO essential. Your pages should have clear headings, useful answers, logical structure, descriptive titles, relevant keywords, and information that directly satisfies the user's search intent.
Google's current guidance says SEO fundamentals remain important for generative AI search. It also recommends creating unique, helpful, people-first content instead of relying on shortcuts or so-called AI search hacks.
But simply adding keywords is not enough. AI systems increasingly look for clear facts, useful explanations, original insights, comparisons, examples, and evidence that can support an answer. Recent research into AI citations also suggests that structured pages with extractable information can have greater influence when they are selected as sources.
On-page SEO tells AI what you know. Off-page SEO helps establish why your brand may be worth trusting.
Quality backlinks, industry mentions, digital PR, expert references, reviews, and citations across reputable websites can strengthen your overall authority.
This is becoming especially interesting in AI search. Research into generative search suggests that AI systems can place significant value on third-party authoritative sources and earned media when selecting information for generated answers.
However, this does not mean you should chase hundreds of backlinks. Relevant, genuine mentions are more valuable than artificial link-building.
If you have to choose, start with on-page SEO. Without crawlable, indexable, useful content, there is little for AI systems to understand or cite.
But long-term AI visibility requires a combination:
Useful content + strong technical SEO + genuine authority + credible external mentions = stronger AI visibility.
Think of on-page SEO as building the foundation and off-page SEO as building reputation.
The real goal is not to “hack” AI search. It is to become a source that AI systems can easily understand, verify, and confidently reference. That is the SEO strategy most likely to remain valuable as search continues to evolve.
